Free Tax Help Courtesy of the IRS
Tax season is a source of headaches everywhere and the IRS isn’t exactly known for their kind-heartedness. However, that’s all about to change with the introduction of two new – and free – programs being offered for families that make less than $50,000 annually.
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling For The Elderly (TCE) programs connect trained tax preparers with those individuals who need help with their returns. These programs work in conjunction with local governments and social service agencies, libraries, and other community organizations to make help easy to access for everyone.
VITA offers IRS-certified volunteers who provide basic tax preparation help for those who qualify. They work with these individuals to make sure they’re not missing any special or difficult to understand and spot tax credits and then show them how to file electronically – which speeds up the refund process.
The TCA also offers help to everyone – but focuses primarily on those over the age of 60. These volunteers specialize in questions relating to retirement and pensions. These volunteers are often retired tax specialists who can both relate to and assist the elderly – often working with services such as the AARP.
Both of these new programs will surely go a long way in lessening the tax season burden on families and elders, while also working to change the reputation of the oft maligned Internal Revenue Service. Win-win situation.
