The Troops Come Marching Home Again

Say goodbye to Iraq! Whether the move is an election year tactic, or merely a promise finally made good from the previous election, the fact remains that the final US troops have pulled out of Iraq and are on their way home. The Iraq War, from the US Army perspective, is over. Although a few hundred American troops remain on Iraqi soil at one base – at the height of the war, the US maintained almost 500 bases- they remain there on a non-combative basis, aiding only in training programs.
The Iraq War, that lasted almost nine years, claimed almost 4,500 American lives, let alone tens of thousands of Iraqis. Many consider this war to be the worst since Vietnam (taking into account that the Korean “conflict” was only a “police action”) and seriously eroded America’s military image abroad.
It is no coincidence that the final pullout has taken place concurrent with the official opening of the 2012 election season. But, for those soldiers who will soon be on their way home, and will happily re-unite with their families in time for the holidays, the elections are furthest from their minds.
For generations to come, historians will debate the benefits and detriments of the Iraq War, as well as examine the politics that surrounded America’s involvement. But, for the brave men and women who lived on the front lines for nearly a decade, America salutes them and offers them a warm homecoming. And, for those who returned home as a memory, the nation offers its pride and everlasting thanks for their contribution in helping make the world a safer place.
