A single mother has adopted her best friend’s 5 youngest children, after they tragically lost both parents within 6 months of each other. Big-hearted Julie Jones and Caroline Atkins become friends years ago after meeting on the first day of secondary school. In April 2009 Caroline received the devastating news that she had an inoperable brain tumor and was given just 12 months to live. Sadly her husband David died just 9 months later from a brain hemorrhage.
As Caroline become increasingly unwell, worries about what would happen to her 5 young children played regularly on her mind. Fearing Michael 12, Kieran 11, James 10, Emma 8 and Chantelle 6 would be taken into care and sent to separate foster homes, the best friends came up with an agreement they called ‘Plan B’. When Caroline passed away Julie was true to her word and lovingly welcomed all 5 kids into her home. With 3 boys of her own the kindhearted Cambridgeshire mom had to turn her dining into another bedroom. She has received no help from the local council. In fact they not only turned down planning for an extension that would make the house more suitable for the children but they have also refused any financial assistance.
The heroic mom who balances family life with full time work for the RAF is taking it all in her stride. She has no regrets and says, “What I am doing is something very natural and ordinary. I’m there when they need a mummy, when they need love and care. And I know Caroline would have done exactly the same for me.”
