As far as Smartphone apps go, while many are useful, a vast majority have been designed for pure entertainment. But, while dozens, if not hundreds, of new apps become available on a regular basis, every now and then a new app makes its appearance and receives rave reviews from more than just the developer. However, how often does a new app receive approval from the FDA?
A company named iHealth has produced an iPhone accessory that makes checking blood glucose levels ever so much simpler. For many individuals who must check their blood glucose levels regularly throughout the day, the task can become an annoying chore. Yet, it is a chore that cannot be ignored, at the risk of serious health complications.
There are two steps required to check one’s blood glucose level – taking a small blood sample on a test strip and placing the strip in a small glucometer to analyze the results. The Smart GlucoMeter by iHealth consists of a small dongle that attaches to your iPhone. After taking a blood sample, the strip is inserted in the dongle to analyze the glucose level and chart blood glucose readings. It will even show you 7-day, 14-day, and 30-day averages, and create personal records. The Smart GlucoMeter will also remind you when you should take insulin or medication.
The manufacturer is anticipating FDA approval for this health app, and hopes to make it available towards the middle of 2012.
