An 18-year-old beauty queen is now having the last laugh at the bullies who made cruel taunts about her severe acne and made school life a misery. Like many teenagers pretty Harriet Page suffered from acne, which can be caused by hormonal changes in the body during puberty. While the majority of teens will have the occasional breakout but there are some, like Harriet, that have such bad acne it results in painful and unsightly red papules and pustules all over the skin.
Being nicknamed ‘dart board’ and feeling so self-conscious about her appearance made the Hampshire lass want to avoid school. Doctors prescribed a 4-month course of Roaccutane to help combat the acne. It had a miraculous effect and now only the faintest of scars remain on her face. So good are the results that Harriet says she is happy to leave the house without wearing any makeup, something she never would have done before.
Now at University, studying for a degree in Spanish and Italian, Harriet was encouraged by her mom to enter the Miss Hampshire 2012 beauty pageant. She said: “I haven’t thought about what it would be like to win but I would be speechless. Just to get this far is amazing and I’m so happy with that because it has helped build my confidence even more.”
